Who Should Attend?
The conference is aimed at the array of individuals educating our children including teachers, parent involvement coordinators, site managers, home based supervisors, child development and education managers, family and community partnership managers and agency directors for both Head Start and Early Head Start.
Pre-Conference Research Institute: February 8
The Edward Zigler Western Research Institute will be held the day preceding the Education Conference. It will offer practitioner focused briefings on cutting edge research, informing best practices around dual language learners, child assessment, collaboration, early math, health and nutrition, Early Head Start, and parent training and involvement. Our audience includes directors, education managers/coordinators, policy makers and researchers. Dr. Deborah Stipek, Dean of the School of Education at Stanford University will be our keynote speaker. The Research Institute is cosponsored by NHSA, Region IX HSA and CHSA.

Conference Keynote Speakers
Opening -- Linda AloneLinda Acredolo, Ph.D.
Linda Acredolo, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of California at Davis, is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of child development. Dr. Acredolo earned her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota and is a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society. She is also co-author with Dr. Susan Goodwyn of three bestselling parenting books, Baby Signs, Baby Minds, and Baby Hearts and a member of the Parents Magazine Advisory Board. In 1982, along with Dr. Goodwyn, Dr. Acredolo began over two decades of research, much of it federally-funded, documenting the many benefits to young children of being encouraged to use signs to communicate before they can talk.
Closing -- Jerry Tello
Jerry Tello comes from a family of Mexican and Texan roots and was raised in south central Los Angeles. He is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of family strengthening, community mobilization and culturally based violence prevention / intervention issues. He has extensive experience in the treatment of victims and perpetrators of abuse and in addictive behaviors, with a specialization in working with multi-ethnic populations. Over the last 30 years Mr. Tello has dedicated his efforts to preventing and healing the pain of relationship / community violence, teen pregnancy, fatherlessness, and internalized oppression by speaking on these issues to over half a million people across the nation.

Special Offerings:
Early Head Start Special Track -- This year CHSA will offer a full conference track devoted entirely to Early Head Start. This will be especially valuable for new grantees. The EHS track will include workshops on social emotional milestones, California’s infant-toddler learning guidelines, issues in home visiting, compliance issues, program start up, and much more. (Cost for this is covered in basic registration fee -- no extra charge)
Awards Luncheon -- Each year CHSA honors special individuals from within California’s Head Start community: an administrator, teacher, support staff person, parent and friend of Head Start who have made a special contribution. This inspiring event is regarded as a conference highlight. (Ticket required.)
Public Policy Breakfast -- This session features policy leaders and advocates who are leading the agenda on behalf of at-risk children. The speakers will include a state and national level leader who brief participants on the latest policy issue developments. (Ticket required.)
Aquarium Tour -- The Aquarium of the Pacific is located just a few blocks from the hotel and has a special program designed for teachers offering curricula that they can take back to the classroom. Exploring the vastness and diverse habitats of the Pacific Ocean, the aquarium boasts 32 exhibits, a shark lagoon, and more. (Ticket arrangements will be handled locally.)

Please Note: CHSA is not holding a Parent Conference in 2010, in deference to the NHSA Parent Conference held in California. CHSA will resume its annual Parent Conference in 2011.
Registration
Early registration for the core Education Conference is $289 for CHSA members and $339 for non-members, with a Dec 21 deadline. Regular registration is $309/359 until Jan 22, and on-site registration will be $339/389. Special program offerings are extra. Full event pricing details
